We're getting near the end (hey, I told you it would be wall-to-wall, all day...), but here's one more absolutely wonderful love song you probably don't know.
Actually....well, if you've read these pages for a while, you might know this one since I've posted it before. But I think it's one of the most gorgeous love songs ever written for Broadway that I can't let Valentine's Day go without playing it again.
This is "When Did I Fall in Love?" from the Tony Award-winning Best Musical and Pulitzer Prize-winning Fiorello! with a score by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock.
What I love so much about this song is that as lush and lyrical and soaring as it is, it also is a terrific example of what Sheldon Harnick does so remarkably with his words -- he takes lyrics that are flowingly poetic, yet makes them sound simple, like everyday conversation. And it's that matter-of-factness amid such vibrantly romantic words that make this so special.
Robert J. Elisberg is a political commentator, screenwriter, novelist, tech writer and also some other things that I just tend to keep forgetting.
