For a long while, rational people have suggested that the Tea Party (tm) corporations are made up of crazy people and racists. Every time they try make this point, the eight people in the Tea Party (tm) corporations who are not actually crazy or racist get all upset, and so too do the crazy people and racists surrounding them.
The difficulty in proving the point, other than trusting your eyes, is that all groups do have crazy people in them, so it's easy for members of the Tea Party (tm) corporations to simply say, "Oh, those are just the few crazy people who happen to belong. You have lunatics, too." So, it came as a pleasure to finally see that an actual leader of a Tea Party (tm) group just showed the world how truly off-the-ledge demented he really was. The founder of Tea Party Unity (tm), Rick Scarborough had a conversation last Thursday with Peter LaBarbera about various anti-gay tactics they could take. (To give the honorable Mr. LaBarbera his proper due and title, he is president of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality.) A recording of the conversation is available, and while it's ghastly nuts, one excerpt leaps out to make the rest seem merely pathetic, bigoted and hate-filled by comparison, rather than certifiable. “The whole issue of a class action lawsuit, you and I have talked about this a little bit," Scarborough says. "I just wonder if you’ve explored that, talked to anyone about it.” Yes, that's true, you read it right. The head of Tea Party Unity (tm) wants to file a class action lawsuit against The Gays. One would think that in order to file a class action lawsuit, it was necessary for those filing it to have class. By the way, People for the American Way have posted a transcript and audio recording here. I suspect they figured that, for some reason, no one would believe it... And what would be the supposed basis of this imagined class action suit? As this head-exploding conversation continues, President LaBarbera compares homosexuality to -- tobacco companies, since after all they have so much in common. Like the letters o, m and i.. "Obviously," he blathers, trying to sound informed and sane (two qualities long-since passed), "statistically now even the Centers for Disease Control verifies that homosexuality much more likely leads to AIDS than smoking leads to cancer. And yet the entire nation has rejected smoking, billions of dollars are put into a trust fund to help cancer victims and the tobacco industry was held accountable for that." Maniacally crazy as that last statement is, it's made all the worse because it's even more maniacally, factually, totally wrong. Indeed, a study by the CDC in 2008 said here pretty much the exact opposite -- that “more deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders COMBINED." (Emphasis added.) Go figure. What these two fine human beings were saying not only wasn't nuts, but had no basis in reality. In a related story, it is rumored that several other Tea Party (tm) groups funded by the Koch Brothers are concerned about all the epidemic deaths caused by Asiatic Bird Flu and are preparing a class action suit against people who shake hands. Another group of Tea Party (tm) corporation members are outraged by the debilitating effects of mononucleosis on society and have reportedly filed a class action lawsuit against people who kiss. Sources report, as well, that Tea Party Express (tm) will be filing a class action lawsuit against heart disease and old age, for conspiracy to commit death. All these other suits aside, is this interest by Mr. Scarborough proof that the core of the Team Party (tm) corporations is crazy, racist and hate-filled? No, of course not. It's just that all the other evidence we've been seeing and hearing for years is.
