On this Veterans Day, we spend the day in solemn appreciation for all that the Trump children say they sacrificed on behalf of the country.
Yes, really. Well, okay, to be fair, it's not all the Trump children who say it, just Don Jr. (Though to be equally fair, I don't want to short-change the others and for all I know they all believe it.) That said, even though for all we know it's "just" Don Jr., what he actually said is even worse than what I wrote above. In large part, that's because he said it after visiting Arlington National Cemetery. No, really. In his new book, Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us, Donald Trump Jr shows why it might be best if he silenced himself when he writes about the time he visited Arlington National Cemetery and saw the rows and rows of graves of those soldiers who gave their lives fighting to defend the United States, with American flags on each gravestone waving across the open field -- and what he thought about upon seeing all that was...himself.and the business deals he had sacrificed. The occasion took place early during the administration. The family was at Arlington Cemetery for Dad Trump to lay a wreath on the Tombs of the Unknowns. "I rarely get emotional, if ever,” Trump Jr. says -- most likely one of the few things in the book that is absolutely believable. And that as they drove past the rows of white grave markers, he notes thinking about the gravity of it all and profound feelings of love and patriotism. And then adds -- “In that moment, I also thought of all the attacks we’d already suffered as a family, and about all the sacrifices we’d have to make to help my father succeed — voluntarily giving up a huge chunk of our business and all international deals to avoid the appearance that we were ‘profiting off the office,’” It's a moving, heart-wrenching appreciation and sacrifice that makes one proud to be an American. After reading it -- and re-reading it to make sure you read it correctly the first time -- It's so hard to imagine that Don Jr. rarely gets emotional, if ever. I only hope his dad lets him tells that moving story today on on Veterans Day, and even repeat it on Memorial Day -- assuming Trump is still in office. It truly shows as clearly as possible exactly what the Trump family's love for soldiers really and truly is that their dad always proclaims. (By the way, it's worth noting that -- as pathetically ghastly as that passage in the book is -- it suggests that the Trump company did give up international deals. Which we know is not true, since at the very least the company only weeks before announced expansion plans of its golf course in Turnberry. Which is in Scotland. Which is not part of the United States. And is therefore international.) So, on this Veterans Day, I plan to head over to the Veterans Cemetery -- across the street from where I used to live in in Westwood Village -- and think about the sacrifice the Trump kids gave to their country to help their father succeed. Given that their dad inherited $413 million, I so admire the sacrifice.
