On Meet the Press on Sunday, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) criticized his fellow-senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) who had previously attempted to suggest that it was actually President Obama, of all people, who was the stumbling block to passing immigration reform. "I think Ted Cruz is fixated on this issue," Sen. Menendez said, "and it’s amazing to me representing a state like Texas that he doesn’t understand that a pathway to citizenship is really what is desired. I think he has Obamaphobia."
(Side Note: I have to jump in here to say that whoever came up with it, Sen. Menendez or someone on his staff, or just something he heard, "Obamaphobia" is one of the great, new coined words. Hat's off.) To this, Sen. Cruz responded in a Tweet, "If supporting real immigration reform, not path to citizenship is 'Obamaphobia,' guilty as charged." If Mr. Cruz's reply Tweet sounded familiar, there's a good reason for it. Back in March, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) gave an interview in which he called his own party member Ted Cruz "a wacko bird" To which Mr. Cruz responded in...well, a Tweet -- “If standing for liberty and standing for the Constitution makes you a wacko bird then I am a very, very proud wacko bird,” Just a few clarifications for Ted Cruz, since he clearly -- and repeatedly -- misses the point of what keeps getting said to him. No, "Standing for liberty and standing for the Constitution" does not make you a wacko bird. Being irresponsible and flinging wild, crazy charges is what makes you a wacko bird. And no, "Supporting real immigration reform" does not make you Ombamaphobic. Suffering from unrelenting, irrational fear and lashing out virulently at everything President Barack Obama says and proposes is what makes you Obamaphobic. Also, Mr. Cruz might want to look into getting a new speechwriter or chief of staff or intern who sends out his Tweets, because repeating the same petulant comeback in a Tweet to your BFF's is the equivalent of a pre-teen trying to bluster, "I know you are, but what am I?!" In his next Tweet, I almost expect to see Mr. Cruz write what Tiffany told Chrissy that Jessica said Dustin said about Jennifer. On the other hand, at least we now know in Ted Cruz's own words that he acknowledged being an Obamaphobic wacko bird.
