Back in 2014, Emma Stone was scheduled to appear in the revival of Cabaret, opposite Alan Cumming, recreating his Tony-winning role as the Emcee. A scheduling issue came up, though, and she had to cancel. Michelle Williams took over the role for the show's April opening. However, later in the year, in November, Stone was able to rejoin the show and performed the role for four months. Here she is singing one of the songs, "Perfectly Marvelous," that was cut from the movie. The lead-in dialogue with 'Cliff' (the character played by Michael York in the film), played by Bill Heck, is a bit difficult to make out, but if you raise the volume high, it helps -- and once she gets into the song, things are better. If you've only seen the film, know that the movie reworked the character of 'Cliff' from the stage version and brought out that he was gay, which I believe is true to the original anthology, The Berlin Stories, by Christopher Isherwood. In the stage musical, though, that wasn't the case. Whether they've subsequently rewritten the stage show fit the original source material and movie, I don't know. The dialogue here hints at it, though.

The current London staging (which I had the privilege of seeing with Eddie Redmayne as the MC and Jessie Buckley as Sally) does imply rather than state out loud Cliff is gay - it also takes a very different approach to the character of Sally, which is closer to the books.

Mike -- "Incredibly lucky" is the phrase I'd use for you to have gotten to see that production. I had read about it months before it opened, and it gave me one more reason to be furious at the pandemic. I can't swear that I'd have tried to get a very-limited ticket (despite its cost) and fly there, but I'd have at least considered it. Again, how lucky of you.

Robert - they have very deliberately prevented any videos of the stage show getting out. The entire theatre was remodelled to be the Kit Kat Keller, to make it a fully immersive experience, and yeah - I was extremely lucky to see it.

Mike, thanks. Yes, I assumed it was something like that -- I'm just surprised that they themselves didn't film something of the show -- and then release like 30 seconds of it as a sort of teaser, which lot of shows do. Obviously, they've made the choice not to. I understand that, I'm just sorry for it...

Mike, thanks. Yes, that's sort of what I'm referring to -- though the first link is longer than other promotional clips I've seen. But it's still just silent snippets with the chorus singing over it all. I wish they had made the decision to release even just 30-second clips of some performances. Ah, well, so be it.
