"I care very deeply about women."
-- Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), House Minority Leader Whether or not Mr. Cantor's statement is true -- and honestly, who in the world would expect him to say otherwise? I mean, seriously, saying, "I don't care much about women" doesn't seem likely, does it?, even if it came from Todd Akin as an addendum to his comments about "legitimate rape" -- the issue isn't whether Eric Cantor or every single Republican in Congress cares about women oh-so-deeply. It's whether they're willing to pass laws that don't belittle and harm them, and actually help. Closing health clinics, instituting forced vaginal probes, passing laws that block basic access to abortion offices which are legal, blocking passage of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and refusing to pass the Violence Against Women Act -- for starters -- tends to speak louder than, "I care very deeply about women."
