When I noted in the past how, one of the things I love about the Mystery Guest segment on What's My Line? is that you get people on as guests who you'd never imagine as contestants on a game show -- this is a perfect example. It's renowned Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. But there's a twist here. The twist is that he's not there as a Mystery Guest! There are no blindfolds, and he simply walks in and signs in with his real name.
I think that in these days, with 24/7 news, and the Supreme Court so politicized, you wouldn't have been able to get away with this -- assuming you'd even have a justice on a TV game show. But once upon a time, Supreme Court Justices were really that unknown.
Clearly, this is Supreme Court Justice on Quiz Show Day. As I posted earlier, Stephen Breyer appeared on the wonderful and witty news-based NPR quiz program, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! Unlike Justice Douglas, he was also quite well-known by the panel. You can hear it on the previo)
