Okay, I fudged things a little bit. When I mentioned yesterday that Anna Kendrick first came to my attention in the movie, Up in the Air, that wasn't true. Although, in fairness, when I saw the movie, I didn't know that. Maybe 10 years earlier, that had been a PBS special, My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies. It was a wonderfully-done variety of Broadway actresses performing a range of classic numbers and unlikely duets, and inventive mash-ups of songs. One of the latter was one of the showstopping numbers of the night. At the time, the gritty revival of Cabaret was on Broadway, so they cleverly did the cheery song, "Life Upon the Wicked Stage" for Show Boat, and as the backup singers used the sleezy Kit Kat Klub women, as a sweet little girl in pig-tails sang the lead. And that sweet little girl in pig-tails was none other than 12-year-old Anna Kendrick. I had no idea who she was at the time, so her name didn't register. But I always remembered the number. And years later, doing a search, I came upon it again -- and had one of those, "Oh, my God, that was her???!" moments. And so it was. Here 'tis, mein damen und herren, "Life Upon the Wicked Stage" with 12-year-old Anna Kendricks and the Kit Kat Klub Girls. (One of the fine readers of this here website, Nell Minow, commented about this video on Facebook and posted version of it. But that one had Japanese subtitles. This version below is Subtitle Free.)
