Back on this date, December 3, in 1818, the state of Illinois was admitted to the Union. That would make today its 197th anniversary. Those of you planning to get a nice gift for the 200th, you might want to start preparing now. Of course, if you wait about three week, you can probably pick up some post-Holiday bargains.
For those who want to sing along, here's the state song, "By the Rivers Gently Flowing," written by C.H. Chamberlain. It's performed by the University of Illinois Varsity Men's Glee Club, with about 200 joining in, celebrating their 125th anniversary. Lots o' anniversaries gently flowing, I must say.
As befits pretty much all state songs -- except probably "Oklahoma!" (yeeow!!)-- it's appropriately solemn, so hat's off...
