A preview has just been released for the seventh season of Jerry Seinfeld's web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. If you have never seen it, the show is basically almost-exactly what the title says -- Seinfeld is loaned high-end cars, goes to pick up his comedian guests, and they drive to a coffee shop, where they talk over their beverage.
He looks to have some good guests this season, including Steve Martin, Will Ferrell and Garry Shandling. But stick around to the very end when you'll get just the briefest taste of who his guest will be in just over a week, on December 30. By the way, though I can't embed the video here, you might enjoy clicking here to see an episode from this past year. It's not the funniest they've had, but one of the noteworthy. It only took six seasons, but his guest is Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The affection they have for one another comes through. Turner Classic Movies has put together and begun airing its annual end of the year tribute to filmmakers -- in front of and behind the cameras -- who passed away during the year. It's a well-done montage that includes quite a few people who I didn't realize would unfortunately be on it. Hopefully, with a week still to go in the year there won't be any additional inclusions. We'll end this year's Holiday Music Fest with Steve Goodman.
I write about the singer-songwriter Steve Goodman a lot on these pages, and post quite a few of wonderful songs. As I often say, none of this gets across the impact and joy he brought to the stage for his live performances, what visceral connection he had with his audiences. I've told some stories about that, but even those don't do it justice. This comes somewhat close, even though it's just audio. I believe this comes from an appearance he made on the TV show Austin City Limits. It wasn't included in the broadcast, but got released on one of his albums. Between numbers, someone in the audience yelled out for him to play the song, "Winter Wonderland." Now, why on earth anyone would request that song at a Steve Goodman concert is beyond me. But call it out they did. And why he didn't just laugh and ignore it and move on, is beyond me, as well -- all the more so because not only was it not even remotely in his repertoire...but he didn't even know the song particularly well. But -- being Steve Goodman and always out to ingratiate himself with this audience and give them the best show he possibly could, often staying on stage long after the scheduled end of his show -- he dove in. And this is what he came up with. It is the most joyous, fun version of "Winterland Wonderland" I've ever heard. I suspect you might agree on your end, too. This is the joy and the wit and artistry and affectiousness of Steve Goodman. Tonight, Christmas Eve, KTLA in Los Angeles -- Chanel 5 -- is showing...are you ready...Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol!!!! O huzzah. It airs at 8 PM. And because this is a CW outlet, I suspect that it might-well be showing on all or most CW stations across the country. So, wherever you are, check your TV schedules. When I wrote the other day how this special hadn't aired yet this season and we were running out of time, but there were still a few days left, little did I know that those few days were plenty enough. The spirits did it! One thing to be aware of -- it's running in an hour time slot, and the show is 52 minutes long. So, unless they are feeling in a generous holiday mood, eight minutes will be cut out. It's likely that they'll lose the opening song, "It's Great to Be Back on Broadway," and that's an acceptable loss. Where the other 4-5 minutes will come, we'll find out. But here's a preview. In honor of Nell Minow, who singled out this song, here's the number where Scrooge visits with the Ghost of Christmas Past and sees himself as a little boy alone in school, and sings "I'm All Alone in the World." Ah, poor lonely child. Poor lonely child. (For some reason, the image is a bit blurry. But it comes through fine enough.) |
