We'll end our Thanksgiving Fest with an assist from Eric Boardman. I'm a big, longtime fan of Jack Benny -- something I got a boost from by my Grandma Rose. But Eric is most likely a far-bigger fan, and he sent this link to the 1952 Thanksgiving episode of Jack Benny's radio program. As Eric wrote -- "Today's sitcom staffers should study the construction. And everybody else should howl with laughter---and marvel at the gags radio encourages. Benny's writers are constantly surprising us with 'visual' images. And Mr. Benny generously shares the jokes with his crackerjack cast. (Thanks always to the Sportsman Quartet for making cigarette commercials satisfying.) 'The Lucky Strike Program with Jack Benny' is high art, maybe the highest of the genre."

Continuing with our Thanksgiving Fest, though there's still more to come we have one last video from a West Wing Thanksgiving episode, an appropriate way to finish the West Wing run with, this about pardoning turkeys. I've never posted this song on our past Thanksgiving Fests. But that's because it's from a show about Christmas, Here's Love, based on the movie Miracle on 34th Street, written by Meredith Willson. But I realized that the opening song takes place during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. So, here is "The Big Clown Balloons" -- preceded by the Overture and followed by the Parade Music. Heading back to The West Wing for our Thanksgiving Fest, this is an absolutely wonderful rendition of probably the most popular Thanksgiving song, "We Gather Together." The video is a bit fuzzy at the beginning, but the scene and song are all worth it. Continuing with our Thanksgiving Fest, we move back to some music for the moment. And this is a rare song (as far as I know) that's about Thanksgiving. Of all things, it's from a British musical, The Good Old Bad Old Days, written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. It's the last of their three stage collaborations, and the only one that only played in London, not making it to Broadway. It's a very nice song appropriately titled..."Thanksgiving Day.
Continuing with the Thanksgiving Fest -- and The West Wing -- here's more from another of their Thanksgiving episodes, this with a bit of history lessons thrown in. |
