The guest this week on the Al Franken podcast is Joe Cirincione. Well, okay, but who is he, you might ask? The official description to that would be that Joe Cirincione is the President of the Ploughshares Fund, which is a public grant-making foundation focused on nuclear weapons policy and conflict resolution. And yes, I know that sounds pretty dry and bureaucratic, except that Joe Cirincione is one of my favorite guests when he's on MSNBC. He's actually an analyst and world expert in the field, is really smart, brutally honest, straightforward and extremely interesting. You pretty much also come away from his appearances feeling far-better informed, though not always happy about it. But usually, since it means you aren't living your life floundering in the dark. As for this particular, given the often-bleak subject matter of nuclear proliferation in the Days of Trump, what stands out is how much sardonic, dark humor there is throughout -- mostly coming from Franken, of course, but Cirincione is an appreciative audience. As was I.
What Franken himself writes about the episode is, "A wise man once said, “Trust, but verify.” That wise man was quoting Ronald Reagan. This week The Al Franken Podcast takes a dark but hilarious look at last week’s missile explosion in Russia. Nuke expert Joe Cirincione explains why it means we’re in a new nuclear arms race. See, what exploded was the nuclear ENGINE for a cruise missile designed to carry a nuclear payload. A nuclear engine doesn’t burn out so the cruise missile can just fly around until the Ruskys decide to hit your city! It’s just part of the nifty but EXPENSIVE new technology that’s going to take all the resources from Russia, China, the USA, and all the other nuclear powers that we’d otherwise be spending to address Climate Change. Classic LOSE-LOSE, baby!!! Are you depressed but fascinated by True Crime Stories? Then this one is for you!"
