What kind of a day was it yesterday? A day like any other, except...You Are There. Indeed there was so much flying in from all over the place, that there was too much to single out.
So, Trump has commanded two Michigan state legislatures to come to the White House today. Given that they're local state officials, "commanded" seems a queasy verb to use. By all rights, they should have turned down such a "command," but being elected Republicans today, that wasn't going to happen. The crack Trump Legal Team is now 1-31 in its court cases. And that one win came in a major case that said poll watchers should be allowed to move a few feet closer (which forced Pennsylvania vote counters to shut down for a few hours to re-set the room for coronavirus safety protocols) and also said that ballots that arrived after the election should be put off to the side temporarily...something which the state had said previously that it was already doing. As for the rest of the cases, all of which they lost, this is the head of the Republican Party, which has long screamed (and even passed state laws) against frivolous lawsuits. And this has been the Super Bowl of frivolous lawsuits. The CDC Task Force finally held another meeting, and the head of that group, Vice President Mike Pence, said that the huge rise in cases was perhaps the responsibility of -- of course -- the media. Never mind that almost all science experts in infectious disease explained eight months ago that this second wave would happen. So, considering that Mr. Pence is the head of the Task Force and this is how he views the cause of the huge spike, it is not surprising that the surge in cases and deaths has been as massive as it has been. Speaking of which, for the second day in a row there were 2,000 deaths from the coronavirus. Once, 1,000 deaths a day was considered the ghoulish standard. The number of American deaths is now up to 258,333 -- so far. The crack Trump Legal Team's efforts transcend even frivolous lawsuits and encompasses pure insanity and fascism -- which is not hyperbole when you realize that one of the team's lawyers, Sidney Powell, yesterday said that not only should all the results of every Swing State should be thrown out (and yes, it gets worse), but all those Electoral votes should go to Trump . And yes, you read that right. And no, that's not an exaggerated paraphrasing. Her exact words were -- "The entire election, frankly, in all the swing States should be overturned and the legislatures should make sure that the electors are selected for Trump." Really. Not some votes, or the results of some precincts, or some states -- but the full election in every Swing State should be ignored, and all the legislatures should ignored the voters and just give their elections to Trump. Nothing too overly fascist about that, just avert your eyes and move on. (Note to any Republicans who get upset when then party is charged with fascism, this is only a small part of what is meant. And any who agree with it, then that's actually fascist, too.) For the record, what Ms. Powell (again, a lawyer on Trump's crack legal team) is trying to convince Republicans to believe and rise up over is literally against federal law. The process to determine Electors must be set before an election -- it cannot be changed after. And this raging lunacy doesn't include her charge that part of the supposed fraud was put in place by Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez -- who died in 2013. How bad was it? Tucker Carlson on "Fox News" tried to get Ms. Powell to provide the evidence to support her claims of election fraud, but told his audience that ""she never sent us any evidence despite a lot of requests, polite requests, not a page. When we kept pressing she got angry and told us to stop contacting her." When Tucker Carlson doesn't buy your crazy and let's everyone know, you've crossed over deep into dark oblivion. And this is Trump's legal team (sic). The state of Georgia finished its recount with almost no results changed. Indeed in most counties, the difference in each was no more than 10 votes. So much for fraud. The results will be certified today. And this was all just yesterday. Meanwhile, the elected officials of the Republican through all of this are silent Worse, many are active participants. That's why this is not about Trump because we know who he is. This is about the elected officials of the Republican Party who enable his fascist efforts to undermine democracy, and are complicit. And this was all just yesterday. What kind of a day was it? A day like any other, except...You Are There.
