This is the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors celebration for Carole King. And it is VERY entertaining, and unlike any of their other presentations over the years. That's because, when the ceremony was going on, at the same time on Broadway there was a musical about her life, Beautiful, and they incorporate the show and its cast into the production. But best of all is how emotional and expressive Carole King is bouncing in her seat in excitement and surprise is watching it all. This is a person who should never play poker She'd give everything away. Watching Carole is almost as fun as the show itself. Especially during the part which is now considered on of the great, iconic moments in Kennedy Center Honors history. I will say no more, it will be clear. And fun too is watching her next to the Obamas, having a wonderful time themselves, and singing along -- and even getting emotional, too. But above all, it's just 15 minutes or so of wonderful music. That helps, too... I've had the occasion to meet Carole King and under somewhat intimate circumstances. I've told the story here before, but in brief I was invited to be the guest of a friend at a political fund-raiser which was being held at the house of another friend, where Sen. Ted Kennedy was speaking. When it was all over, I hung around to chat with my friend at whose house it was -- and he was dating Carole King at the time. So, we got to chat. And she was absolutely charming, warm, friendly and told a very funny story at her own expense. It was about being incompetent with computers, finally going online to read the exchanges at a Carole King Chat Room -- and being unable to convince people that she was really Carole King because "They knew more about me than I do," culminating in not being able to answer what color sweater she wore at a concern a decade earlier. And was dismissed and ultimately left the chat room. Anyway, this is a total joy. And when it seems over, just jump past the commercials because there's more at the finale.
