Back in junior high school gym class, we once had an exercise where everyone had to do a sort of "hand stand" though using the wall to balance our legs. Then the gym teach said we could all drop to the floor. And everyone did -- except me. I kept throwing my legs down...or at least I thought I was, but they wouldn't go down. I kept trying, but clearly I was throwing my legs in the opposite direction, against the wall, which is why they weren't dropping. But I kept trying, even as the gym teach kept saying, "Bob, throw your legs down." Finally, in exasperation, I had no choice but to call out to him, "Which way is down?!!" He came over and knocked my legs to the ground. Which felt weird because it was the opposite way I'd been thrown my legs, sure that that was "down." But it was against the wall. Even when I knew it wasn't working, I was unable to figure out how to throw my legs the other way.
That was the first time I noticed the issue, but since then I've always had no sense of perspective when upside-down. Which is one additional, personal reason I am in awe of this video from the other day of Olympic Gold Medalist Simone Biles.
