In a broadcast from Richmond, Virginia, today's guest contestant on the 'Not My Job' segment of the NPR game quiz show Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me! is U.S. Senator and former Virginia governor Tim Kaine, who also was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 2016 as running-mate of Hillary Clinton. Host Peter Sagal touches on the election a few times (and in amusing ways...), though doesn't dwell on it. Mainly, Kaine tells a long, hilarious story about a Virginia tradition when the outgoing governor hands over the keys to the governor's mansion to the new occupant and is supposed to pull a prank. He explains what he did, which he proudly suggests will never be topped.

On this week's 3rd & Fairfax podcast from the Writers Guild of America, the guest is screenwriter Scott Z. Burns whose works include Contagion, The Bourne Ultimatum, and The Informant! He also talks about his two new films this year, both based on true stories: the recently released The Laundromat for Netflix which stars Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman and Andtonio Banderas, directed by Steve Soderbergh, and the upcoming The Report.for Amazon Studios, for which he makes his feature directing debut, starring Adam Driver, Annette Benning and John Hamm.
This week's contestant is Deb Anderson from Robbinsdale, Minnesota. The hidden song should be pretty easy. The composer style, too -- but for me, it was a guess of one of a few, and I guessed wrong.
We're in the Hot Stove period now between the end of the baseball season and the start of Spring Training, which is when the news pour in more than the stats. But even for those whose eyes roll wearily at any time when baseball is mentioned, this still this is notable.
The Chicago Cubs just hired Rachel Folden as a hitting coach for Rookie League. She's believed to be the first woman on a coaching staff in a MLB organization. "She's going to be a star. She's the first person I brought in for an interview," said Justin Stone, Cubs hitting director, adding "Rachel's been working alongside me for the last couple years, and there is nobody more confident. You worry, or you take a second thought of, 'How are guys going to react to the first time they've ever been coached by a woman in their life?' Rachel's the perfect person to cross this barrier, because not only is she one of the most talented people in our industry, she's extremely confident. And, if somebody gives her crap, she'll get in the cage and probably outswing them." You can read more about it here.
On this week's Al Franken podcast, he moves off from politics for the week and talks to writer/director/producer Judd Apatow (whose works include Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Trainwreck and producing Anchorman and Bridesmaids). They discuss comedy, mental health and politics. Okay, so they do get some politics in there, too...
He's ba-ack. Randy Rainbow returns with a new song, just in time for the impeachment hearings. It's fairly straight-forward on both the production and song end, but both are fun and enjoyable. |
