It's Not Easy Being Greene

For the past few months, I written that it's my hope Democrats make Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) the face of the Republican Party in the House.  And I've seen a few efforts lately that suggest that will be the case.

The good news for Democrats is that they keeps giving them fodder.

In fact, unlikely as it might seem, though impressive in the depth of emptiness, she may have found a way to lose support of her base. While that's not likely, given what we've seen of the GOP base, if anything can do the trick, this might be it -- she wants to ban adult websites.  She said this as the keynote address speaker at the Putnam County Lincoln Reagan Dinner.  Unfortunately there's no footage of her comments (yet, so hopefully they'll show up), but Greene explained that, while she apparently wasn't aware of such adults sites -- honest, this was her claim -- she finally came across adult videos online because of her involvement looking into Hunter Biden and his laptop.

I don't know what's more weird -- that Marjorie Taylor Greene wants to ban adult videos which might be profoundly disturbing to her supporters, or that she actually only learned about their existence.

For the record: as far back as a decade ago, such websites were already so prominent that the 2004 Tony-winning best musical, Avenue Q has a song, "The Internet is for Porn."

By the way, it occurred to me as I watched this video is that the "Q" in the title of the show, Avenue Q, is known to stand for "queer" -- but makes the Republican devotion to following "Q" hilarious.

All this said, what should lose support for not only Greene but the Republican Party as a whole -- separate from merely her base, and far more problematic for the 2024 election across the country -- was her bizarre attack on Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of teachers for not being a mother, despite having married into a family with children and raising them.  This not only dismisses and demeans all mothers who have married into families with children who they raise, but also all mothers who adopted children and all all grandparents, family members and friends who took in children and raised the -- not to mention all the children of those children.

​There have been a great many rebukes of her over this, the most impactful of which I heard was by former RNC head Michael Steele was was raised by an adopted mother was was scathing in his reaction on MSNBC -- with Randi Weingarten there as a guest.

Putting aside the question of "What on God's earth was Marjorie Taylor Greene thinking in her rant???" at any time, but especially three weeks before Mothers' Day! -- what stands out most is not Green's clueless emptiness...but there has been zero criticism of her by any elected Republican in Congress.  As the video above shows, two Democrats immediately slammed it, to the degree of asking that her words be stricken from the official record.  As all Republicans on the committee were silent.  And remain silent.

Silent?  This is about as easy a layup as any politician has.  Defending mothers!  I mean, one of the mantras of American wholesomeness is "Moms, baseball, hot dogs and apple pie."  Or "As American as Mom's apple pie."  Watch any sporting event -- when an athletic looks into the camera and shouts a call out to his or her parents, it is always and only "Hi, mom!"  (Dads of the world get left out -- and understand.)  And Republicans have yet to be able to offer one word chiding Greene as perhaps going too far over the top.  Nothing.

Any Democrat running in 2024, especially in a purple district, should make this point about their opponents silence defending mothers.

In fact, I'll offer a suggestion -- and I actually remembered that I have a tiny contact at the DNC who I can pass this along to, if the spirit moves me.  It's that Democrats prepare ads to release in two weeks (at this point) that show video of Marjorie Taylor Greene's rant about not being real mothers and then end them with the graphic --
