The Hi, Sierra Club

Several weeks back, I posted a few videos of duets with Sierra Boggess and Julian Ovenden.  This one is of Sierra Boggess alone.

She’s a wonderful performer, and upcoming in a few weeks is going to be appearing in the excellent National Yiddish Theatre Folksbienne’s production of the musical Harmony, by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman.  It’s a show I’ve written about often (including an interview I did with both here) that is finally getting a production in New York City from a first-glass company.  (The name aside, they’ll be doing the show in English.)  It’s a limited run, but I suspect their hope is that if it does well-enough it will transfer to a Broadway theater.

Though Boggess has had a good career appearing in several Andrew Lloyd Webber productions, most notably Phantom of the Opera, she maybe came to the most initial attention when she created the role of ‘Ariel’ in the original Broadway production of The Little Mermaid.

Here she is from that show during a live on-stage performance singing “Part of Your World” in a clip that, for some reason, was on ABC-TV.

(Side note:  Last night, I watched the documentary, Howard, about lyricist Howard Ashman who wrote, among other shows, The Little Mermaid.  In it, they talked about how Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted to cut the song "Part of Your World" from the movie, because not enough happened during the number.  Ashman's response was, "Over my dead body."  He explained it was the story's "I want" song, where the main character explains what the story is about.  And that it was critical to the film.  Ashman won the disagreement.  And the song became one of the musical's most popular.)
