Raye of Hope
The other day I was listening to the radio program The Midnight Special on WFMT in Chicago. It’s usually a classical music station, but one night a week they devote the evening folk music, odd and ends, show tunes, comedy and more. It was a show that was started in 1953 by then-host Mike Nichols. (Yes, that Mike Nichols.)
During the broadcast, they played a song from someone whose work I didn’t know, Raye Zaragoza. I was very taken by it and her voice, “Bittersweet.” It comes from an album she wrote and released last year, Hold That Spirit.
Here’s the song and lyrics.
I knew it in my bones
The day would come when I'd break your heart
It's not that I don't care
But somethings must end
For something else to start
Isn't it bittersweet
When to love is to leave
A blessing, a curse, a high that can hurt
Sometimes to grow is to grieve
Isn't it bittersweet
So raise a glass to who we were
Not all good things are meant to last
Head spinning
Eyes open
This change is coming on fast
Isn't it bittersweet
When to love is to leave
A blessing, a curse, a high that can hurt
Sometimes to grow is to grieve
Isn't it bitter
I've got more questions than answers
Im feeling so small
If love ends, does it mean it never happened at all
From soulmate to stranger
We're here then we're gone
If love ends, does it mean it never happened at all
Did it happen at all
Isn't it bittersweet
When to love is to leave
A blessing, a curse, a high that can hurt
Sometimes to grow is to grieve
Isn't it bittersweet
