If You Remember
In the first part of the wonderfully entertaining “Naked Lunch” interview that Bernie Taupin does with co-hosts Phil Rosenthal and David Wild (which you can listen to here if you missed it -- and Part Two is excellent as well, here), they talk about a song he and Elton John wrote for Frank Sinatra. There is apparently a studio version that never got released, though Sinatra did sing it in some concerts and a bootleg of that exists. Taupin dismisses the song as one he doesn’t think is especially good. But it certainly isn’t bad at all, and has some nice things about it.
Sinatra always referred to it as “Remember,” but Taupin says that its title is “September.” Here’s that in-concert version, performed in 1978.
And as a bonus, this is a two-minute demo of the song that Elton John recorded.
(And for those interested, the song did eventually get released in 1981, recorded by a friend of Elton John, Italian pop singer Donatella Rettore, here.)
