Not Last Week Tonight Tonight
Okay, it's Thursday and this is John Oliver, but it's not him hosting Last Week Tonight. The show was off last Sunday, but I thought therefore it would be a good time to post this video with him in the "John Oliver" spot. It's a really wonderful, half-hour "The Interview" he did for the New York Times Podcast series.
His conversation with host Lulu Garcia-Navarro is very thoughtful, often very interesting, and happily extremely funny throughout. Though the video shows it's 37 minutes long, that's only partly true. The core interview is about 25 minutes, and it's all on video, as the two sit together in the studio. But then for the last 12 minutes, she telephones Oliver with some follow-up questions and also to find out if he remembered the details of a question she'd asked previously which he was only vague on, and he does. And it's a terrific coda to the whole thing.
By the way, the title of the video is a little deceptive. It gives the sense that he's a guy filled with rage and working it out in his material. That's not it all, and the point doesn't come up until about two-thirds of the way through, as I recall. It's something that does bother him, but "something", not a general angst in his life.
