Last Week Tonight Last Night

If you didn't see Last Week Tonight with John Oliver last night, the Main Story was quite entertaining...but weird.  It was about, of all things, the long-running TV franchise for Law & Order.  While recognizing that it is, of course, just a fictional show, Oliver and company point out what an influence it has on not just the public, but police.  And they make some very good points -- and some, I think, stupid ones.  (For starters, while they're correct in noting that the police are treated profoundly favorably on they show, they're wrong in suggesting -- repeatedly -- that it's favorable to police all the time.  And that's not the case.  In fact, a rare, but running theme is how Sam Waterson's character as a child of the 60s has a a mistrust of the police in a lot of areas.)  And more to the point -- it is a fictional show, something Oliver repeats, though it tends to come off as "It's fictional...but..."

All in all, it's a very enjoyable, interesting segment that has a lot of humor and makes a lot of strong, valid points.  It just is a bit...weird.  And misses on more points than is ideal.

But it's especially worth it for the very funny ending.  So, stick around for it.
