Getting a Jones
This is a charming and fun interview with Emilia Jones -- the young actress from the Oscar-winning CODA -- who was on on the British This Morning show. But I particularly wanted to post it for a brief segment when the hosts note that she had appeared on the show back in 2011 when she was only 9 years old, and they showed a clip of it. At the time, she was in the stage musical Shrek playing Princess Fiona as a young girl and did a song from the musical. It only lasts about 30-seconds, but she's so different and energetically good.
If you just want to see that sequence, it comes along at about the 7:00 mark. If you watch the whole video (which is very enjoyable) they reference her father who apparently is a well-known Welsh singer and TV presenter, Aled Jones.
As a bonus, here is Jones at the recent BAFTA Awards singing, "Both Sides Now," which she does spectacularly in the film. Unlike in the movie, she doesn't accompany herself with sign language (except for briefly), but is joined by two ASL interpreters, making it for a moving performance, as well.
By the way, there's extremely quick but lovely moment at the end that I didn't notice the first time I saw the clip. As the audience is applauding, at the 3:23 mark the camera cuts to two women standing, and one of them in green is absolutely beaming and enthusiastically clapping beyond all others. And I realized that that is Alana Haim from the movie Licorice Pizza, who was nominated as Leading Actress, in the same category as Emilia Jones. And her joy at the vocal performance by her fellow-nominee is no doubt made particularly pointed and more appreciated since Haim is first and foremost a professional singer, in the rock group Haim. (In fact, in that regard, I think the young woman standing with her is her sister Este, also in Haim.)
