Better Off Ed
Here's another clip from The Ed Sullivan Show.
I'm a fan of Nat King Cole. I have a couple of "Best of..." albums. A few years ago I saw a very good play about him, Lights Out, that starred Dulé Hill. And for all I know (and suspect) many people ready this have the good taste to be fans, as well. So, this will be a treat -- and a somewhat unexpected one.
That's because it's him just playing the piano alone. No singing at all. And he's just absolutely wonderful.
He began his career as a pianist, so that shouldn't come as a total shock. That's when he played with the Nat King Cole Trio. But by this point, his solo singing career was in full bloom -- so there's not even his trio there with him.
And he's just absolutely wonderful. He begins with a nice arrangement of "Tea for Two" in which, if you listen closely, he interpolates a bit of George and Ira Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town." And then he just lets his artistry take over.
By the way, he's just absolutely wonderful
