Back to Bareilles

Going back to Sara Bareilles, this combines her virtuoso performance with her appearance on (as readers here know) perhaps my favorite talk show, The Graham Norton Show on BBC America.  She sings her “She Used to Be Mine,” from the Broadway musical Waitress, which got her a Tony nomination for Best Original Score – and for which she replaced the Tony-nominated Jessie Mueller in the lead role, when Meuller eventually left the show.

Her performance here blows away the audience – made notable by the silence after she finishes, then erupting in cheers from the usually staid British crowd.  (In fact, in the User Comments section, someone writes that they were actually at The Graham Norton Show that night, and notes, “I was part of the audience and a lot of people next to us were in tears.”)

But she clearly blew away the guests on the panel, as well, since usually the musical guest joins them afterwards on the very end of the couch, but here they all move her to the center, to sit between them all.  Not bad for a panel made up of Terry Gilliam, Robert Downey Jr, Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie.  So, you get the song and her interview afterwards – where, among other things, she talks about repeating her performance in the West End production of the musical.
