National Call Your Mother Day

Once upon a time, Dick Clark Productions would have various TV specials like ones called, Superstars and Their Moms.  That's what this -- aired in 1987 for Mothers Day -- is from.  It's part of a longer clip which, despite the heading, is pretty far from being all that interesting a "punk" and Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad's mom.  (Unless your definition of "punk" is -- "Here, mom, we want to sing one of your poems that we had underscoring put to.)

However, the portion at the end of the clip is fun in an odd, offbeat way -- sports stars of the era singing a rewritten version of the Stevie Wonder song, "I Just Called to Say I Love You," to their mothers, and what keeps it from being too cloying is that it is indeed offbeat, and often off-key.
