Bacall of the Wild

The Kennedy Center Honors always seems to somewhat understandably have more of a difficult time putting on a big gala presentation for actors, but what helps here significantly when Lauren Bacall was honored in 1997 is that in addition to her film work, she also appeared in Broadway musicals, and so there’s wonderful entertainment for her presentation. It’s performed by Christine Baranski, Bebe Newirth and Ann Reinking. (Fun, too, and worth noting is that Newirth and Reinking starred together in the huge hit revival of Chicago, and the producers here had the wisdom to let them perform a bit together.) The entertainment is low-key, and only two of the four songs were from one of the musicals that Bacall did (Applause), but all of it fits spot-on. And it should be mentioned, as well, to see that the honoree to Bacall’s left is Bob Dylan.
