An Improved Improv

A short while back, I wrote about Phil Rosenthal mentioning on his Naked Lunch podcast having seen Elton John on an episode of Inside the Actor’s Studio showing his amazing skill at writing music fast by being given a refrigerator manual and putting music to it. I couldn’t find that, but I did find and post a remarkable video Elton John doing that very thing on Inside the Actor’s Studio with a copy of the play Peer Gynt. The result was gorgeous, and I posted that video here.
And now I’ve found what I suspect was the video Phil was talking about. It’s from years earlier and not on Inside the Actor’s Studio, nor from a refrigerator manual – but it’s an oven manual. So, I suspect he might have confused the two. The event seems to have been with an audience of actors, and it’s interesting to note that the person asking the question – and bringing in the oven manual – was actor Richard E. Grant. And once again, the result is terrific and deeply impressive. I think the Peer Gynt is better, but this is a lot of fun, and so melodic that it gets the audience clapping along, and (being an oven manual) is probably even harder to do.
