You the Man

One of the great treasures of The Ed Sullivan Show is as a reservoir of Broadway musical performances that would otherwise be lost to time.  And here’s one of those treats.  This is 11 minutes of the original cast of Man of La Mancha, with Richard Kiley, Joan Diener and the full company.

By the way, Joan Diener made quite a career playing ‘Aldonza/Dulcinea.”  She not only starred in the role on Broadway, and also in the original London cast opposite Keith Michell – but far more impressively, she played the role, as well, in the French production that starred and was adapted and directed by Jacques Brel.  Normally, I’d say it helped that she was married to Albert Marre who directed the original production, but the breadth and quality of her work shows it was well-earned.
