You Don't Know Jack
This is a good article from Rollcall on efforts to change the Johnson Amendment by using the tax bill. The Amendment is the 1954 law which prohibits churches, charities and all 501(c)(3) organizations to endorse or oppose candidates for office without risking their tax-exempt status. Though it looks to be an uphill challenge to make any changes in the tax bill due to reconciliation requirements, the articles notes that supporters of changing the law have a "Plan B" in using a year-end spending measure.
One of those against change and quoted in the article is Rabbi Jack Moline, who they identify as president of the Interfaith Alliance, though they left out that his is also the Executive Vice President of Telecommunications for Elisberg Industry, and on our Board of Directors. I'm sure the omission was either just an oversight or an edit for space. Anyway, Jack is quoted as --
“We are putting out the call to our membership, to object to any change in the Johnson Amendment. When you mix religion and politics, politics always wins.”
We appreciate it when our Board Members freelance for such good causes.
