What's in a Name?

Football legend Pat Summerall died on Tuesday. Though he was probably best-known to most of the public as a sportscaster, he had also been a highly regarded NFL player, both as a defensive back, but also most notably a kicker.
It's the latter which brought about a story that I suspect few people knew. His first name was not, in fact, actually "Pat." It was George.
However, in football box scores, when a kicker makes the extra point after a touchdown, it's generally listed at "PAT", followed by the name of the player who scored. And since so many box scores listed "PAT Summerall," he just picked up the nickname.
