Van Lingle Mungo

The other day I wrote about sports nicknames, mostly from baseball.  Reader Josh Newman -- son of the oft-mentioned here screenwriter Walter Newman (of Harrow Alley, Cat Ballou and much more) wrote in to remind me of a wonderful, wistful song, "Van Lingle Mungo, by Dave Frishberg, which is just a collection of great baseball player names but, though a pleasure on that level alone, is done in a way that is elegiac.
