Tweet of the Day

Given that today is Sunday, the Blessed Day of the Holy NFL, it's worth noting this tweet on today of all days. I came across it the other day, and it fits for all sports, though it requires a slight double-explanation.

The first is that one of my sports bugaboos is athletes who thank God during their post-game interviews, usually the first thing out of their mouths, and who cross themselves in prayer before a play in hopes of divine intervention. The best explanation of why this is so bothersome came from Bob Costas, who is not only one of the wisest analysts of sports, but also a very devout in in his religious, though he keeps it very private and doesn't wear it on his sleeve and try to impose it on others. (I worked with him on the film BASEketball, and he was a gem of a guy.) What I heard Costas say on a broadcast once when the topic came up was something along the lines of, "What bothers me is the arrogance of it, that with all the true problems and important things in the life, God will go out of His way to see that you get a base hit or beat the other team."

The other thing is that on Twitter there is someone who posts under the moniker of "God," writing tweets as if they were coming from the Almighty. At first, I rolled my eyes at the concept. But tweet after tweet, his postings were not only smart and funny, but consistently so.
