I'm so glad that I posted my piece and the videos on Sunday of Harris's remarkable "Bigger" opening number for the 2013 Tonys, before this announcement today. While I'd like to say how prescient it was, I think that anyone who's seen the job he's done hosting the Tonys and Emmys would be hard-pressed not to be disappointed when there's an awards show and he's not been the host. And it's not that he's so good at hosting in each of these industries, but he actually works in all of them, and has been a star in all, as well. So, it's not a case of "Well, let's get him to host even though he has nothing to do with our field." (While you may not think of him as much as a film actor, he's co-starred in two movies this year alone, the current Gone Girl and 100 Ways to Die in the West. And last year, he starred in his second Smurfs movie.) There is no truth to the rumor that other celebrity hosts are filing a Restraint of Trade lawsuit against him. But as long as we're on the subject, while his "Bigger" opening has deservedly got all the attention, let us not forget his great performance opening the 2011 Tonys. (It helps, too, that it's a wonderful song with very funny, clever lyrics.)
