Trump's Very Bad Weak
For a long while now, I’ve stood by a principle that appears to being the case: that as deeply hellish as Trump is making things for the country, each action will be worse for him. And the public appears to be recognizing it and also that there’s something very wrong with Trump.
Consider:
He started the week at 37% approval. Further, one of his important bases in 2024 were Hispanics. In June of last year, just months before the election, he had 46% approval and 49% disapproval. In a new AP-NORC poll, that number has plummeted to 25% approval and 65% disapproval. That’s minus -40 points! Down from what had been almost fifity-fifty.
So, tell me: what did he do this past week to improve that??
What he did do this past week was release an AI video that dumps sh*t on the public, commute admitted felon George Santos who was expelled from Congress, demolished the East Wing (that polls show by 53-29% the public hates, including a majority of MAGOPS), said he wants to sue his DOJ for $230 million for himself, nominated a self-proclaimed Nazi to be White House Counsel, gave $40 billion to Argentina and said he would be buying beef from Argentina (who also recently sold 650,000 metric tons of soybeans to China), infuriating U.S. ranchers and soybean farmers – and more!!
And even these “more” actions (like pardoning a Chinese crypto magnate who admitted guilt for his platform allowing for money laundering by drug traffickers, terrorists and child traffickers – after the magnate support Trump’s own crypto efforts. And threatening to go to war in Venezuela, as well as killing 37 suspected drug traffickers without evidence or due process) doesn’t include that inflation is increasing, prices are going up, he didn’t released last month’s jobs report, hasn’t released last month’s inflation report, the Israeli-Gaza “peace deal” appears faltering, and the Epstein report is still awaiting… Plus, there was that story about the Young Republicans local leaders sending deep racist and virulent anti-Semitic texts.
So, he’s going to improve on his 37% approval (and 25% among Hispanics) with that being his week?
(How bad was last week for Trump? When planning this article, I literally had to make a list the other day so that I could remember all these problems. And not just remember them for this article, but for future reference. Because there's so much -- from just last week alone that I know I and most everyone will forget some of it. In fact, even when putting together the list, I knew I was forgetting something...and had to double-check earlier articles and online news to remind me, "Oh, yeah, I forgot: he wants to sue his DOJ for $230 million"!!!! There was so much, I had left that out!)
As I’ve written, the public cuts you a bit of slack for doing some things wrong or misguided when your approval is 60%. But when your starting point is 37% (or if you’re Hispanic, 25%), anything wrong or misguided or weird or delusional you do just confirms why your approval is 37% and therefore put it at risk of dropping. The other day on MSNBC, former Senator Barbara Boxer said she was looking for Trump’s approval to drop 30%. I don’t know if we’ll get that low – but it’s not improbable, and it’s far more improbable than him going up seven points.
And how has this week started? In fairness, we’ve only had Sunday so far, but already Trump has posted on the Trump Social site that he wants to ban early voting for the Mid-terms, posted a long, manic, fearmongering medical screed (on which he is thoroughly unqualified) giving disinformation about pregnant women not taking Tylenol, and splitting MMR vaccines for their children into three separate shots, when to delay taking a Hepatitis B (misspelled) shot until, and “IMPORTANTLY, TAKE VACCINE in 5 SEPARATE MEDICAL VISITS. (Whatever that means.) And posting another long screed against Canada making a TV ad that quotes Ronald Reagan criticizing extending tariffs.
Again, all that was on Sunday.
(Though on Saturday, he said he hoped that Stephen Miller would sue people who had called him a bad name. Yes, really.)
And again, just to be clear Trump is doing all this – and “all this” is just deeply problematic things, some bordering on delusional, within the past week -- while starting from just 37% (and 25% for Hispanics).
So, for all this, as hellish as his actions are – and they are deeply hellish -- what has Trump done to improve his plummeting approval??
And it’s not like he’s surrounded himself with a cabinet and advisors who can help him. Instead, he’s hired unqualified incompetents who not only can’t help, but are often causing many of the problems.
How bad are these advisors? Let’s just look at one of the better ones – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. On a Sunday morning talk show, Bessent told ABC’s Martha Radditz, "Martha, in case you don't know it, I'm actually a soybean farmer, so I have felt this pain too." For the record, Mr. Bessent has a net worth of "at least" $521 million. At question is not if he has felt this pain, but if he has even noticed it, if it has affected his life merely anything more than a feather landing on his shoe, before he steps on it. And Scott Bessent is one of the best around Trump.
One of the worst is the far out-of-her-depth press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who on Sunday tweeted about how finally legacy media wrote some common sense about the Trump ballroom, quoting the Washington Post Editorial Board saying, “Trump replacing the White House East Wing is not the end of the world” – except that I read the editorial, and it doesn’t saying anything remotely like that, despite her quoting them! But it was a daily double for Ms. Leavitt, who responded yesterday to a photo of Trump on Air Force One in a supposed meeting with officials from Qatar by writing, “The grind never stops!” – completely missing (as others pointed out) that during this supposed “grind,” the TV in the room was showing they had a UFC fighting match on! And never mind that Qatar is the country that bribed Trump with a $400 million airplane.
And, again, all that too from Leavitt, Bessent…and Leavitt…was just Sunday.
We still have six days left in the week from Trump and them all.
God help us. But also – him. Because Trump is his own worst enemy, everything hellish he does is undermining himself, as well. and…he has dementia, which is degenerative.
Who knows what he’ll do to screw the country – and himself – today.
