The Unanswered Question

Okay, so there's one thing I don't even come close to understanding about Trump trying to get Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign.  It isn't that he's apparently so furious at Sessions recusing himself from any Russia-related investigations despite the fact that Trump and his team should have asked about that when they were interviewing him for the job.  And it isn't that if Trump gets his ultimate wish to have Robert Mueller fired it will likely cause such outrage that it could not only lead to abuse of power impeachment charges and a crushing public reaction to the entire Republican Party.  And it isn't that if Trump wants Sessions out of the job, why doesn't he simply fire him?

No, this is what I don't grasp in the slightest --

Trump is seemingly painting himself as utterly outraged that Sessions lied to the Senate about meetings he had with Russia and even further, showing Sessions as being so irresponsible as to have had secret meeting with Russian officials, both situations so egregious that Trump is pushing the premise that they are evidence that Sessions should resign.

And I get all that.  I get that both of those situations are so egregious that Jeff Sessions should resign.

But --

What I cannot figure out for the life of me is why Trump himself is pushing this line about Sessions and Sessions lying to the Senate and meeting with Russian officials -- the ONLY CONCEIVABLE REASON that he would be doing so was to have conspired with Russia on behalf of the Trump campaign!!!  There is no other rational, believable reason for him to have done so.  "He just wanted to contact Russia on his own for the pure heck of it" doesn't carry any "rational believable" weight.  It barely carries any irrational unbelievable weight.  Which is why the more Trump pushes this, the more he shines the light directly and brightly on himself!

I do not begin to get it.

But I'm okay with it.
