Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were on Stephen Colbert's show Wednesday night, talking about the 50th anniversary edition of their legendary book, All the President's Men, for which they wrote a new introduction. They talked, as well, about the comparisons between Richard Nixon and Trump, the overall point being that Nixon was far worse than people remember and was, like Trump, an actual threat to the Constitution -- but Trump is worse. It was all very interesting, and they were on for almost the entire show. But this is slightly different and comes from the very end of their appearance. It's about Watergate, but there's almost nothing serious here. It's a very funny story they've never told before about dealing with Martha Mitchell, who was the flamboyant, outspoken, occasionally drunk wife of Nixon's Attorney General John Mitchell -- later his campaign manager for re-election and later still convicted felon for his involvement in the scandal. The story they tell is a hoot -- but what stands out even more comes at the very end and is SO wonderful. It's the take Woodward gives to Colbert’s final question that is worthy of a master comedian. Not something you expect of Bob Woodward. And that take alone is almost the sole reason I wanted to post this, even as fun as the story is.
