The Republican Party Had a Very Bad Weak

Last week, there was almost too much interesting news piling up on itself in regards to Trump investigations and the GOP to get a grasp of it all.  Just making a list borders on being overwhelming.  What a past few days it’s been.

Mike Pence being subpoenaed (most likely at his own request).  New classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago that were not only actually copied – but all the better (undercutting the long-running GOP vaudeville mantra of “Hunter Biden,” copied onto a “laptop.”  Trump showing desperation by saying he’s going to call Anderson Cooper (for some unearthly reason) as a witness as the E. Jean Carroll defamation rape trial – and claiming he’ll provide DNA (which he never will).  And Democrats aggressively pushing back at committee hearings, flipping empty Republican accusations with “Okay, if you want to bring that up, then let’s talk about…”.   Like, for just one example, Republican attacks about Democrats using Twitter backfiring and having it turn out it was actually Trump getting Twitter to do his bidding.  (Man, what a horrific first month by the Republican House.)  And Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ disastrous SOTU Address response being so horrible that even Republicans were trashing it.  (And honestly, how insane for a party trying to wean itself from Trump putting his former press secretary on to give the speech.)  And Biden getting Republicans all twisted over supporting cutting Social Security and Medicare and fighting with themselves over it.  And Mitch McConnell throwing Rick Scott under the bus.  And Biden saying that when all the infrastructure programs finally start to kick in around the country -- which Republicans had intentionally delayed in the Infrastructure Bill until after the Mid-Terms – that he’ll “be at all the ribbon cuttings!” drawing public attention to it all.

Most impressive of all this may be Jamie Raskin / Dan Goldman / Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and others destroying the GOP “faux-outrage” agenda at their committee meetings and doing so from the minority side!

(They’ve all be excellent, but Dan Goldman may impress me the most.  I don’t think I’ve seen a first-term Congressman in only his first month be so impactful.  It helps when you’re not only a powerhouse prosecutor, but also lead lawyer of Trump’s second impeachment trial, and really, truly know all the details of what you’re talking about and the other side is flailing to pretend like they do. And he’s rolling over Republicans like they’re papier-mâché.  The smartest thing Hakeem Jeffries has down was to put him on that Oversight Committee.  Republicans don’t know what to make of him – he has all the receipt on anything he opens his mouth about.)

And it will only get worse for Republicans, especially in the House.  Because what’s become clear is that Republicans have spent the past six years supporting Trump’s lies to the point that they now actually believe them.  So, they bring all this non-existent garbage up in hearings – and will keep doing so – but they have absolutely NO evidence to support them.  Because they’re all lies.  I mean, good Lord, there was Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) testifying under oath that he believed Hillary Clinton colluded with the Russians – to do, what?? Make sure she lost?!!

And not only do they not have any evidence, but as I noted, people like Dan Goldman, and Jamie Raskin, and Adam Schiff, and AOC, have all the evidence to support the contrary charge.  “You want to bring this up and open the door???  Great!!  Let’s talk about this – because it’s TRUMP and YOU ALL who have been doing what you’re claiming!  Trump has been projecting his own actions, and you have believed it and enabled him!  So, yeah, let’s have at it!!!”

And when Mitch McConnell (R-KY) went after Rick Scott (R-FL), it clarified that how much he knows the GOP is in huge trouble with Social Security and Medicare.  Because not only is there actual written material and video by Republicans senators calling for cutting the programs -- most notably Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Mike Lee (R-WI)--  but in the House all those crazy MAGA Insurrectionist Republicans are crying out about it and are willing to vote against the debt ceiling and risk bringing down the economy, and there’s pretty much nothing McConnell can do about them.

And worse – Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has lost control of his party already to the extent that they are bizarrely still enabling the serial, pathetic con man “George Santos” who has become quite-literally a national laughingstock…and ceded the megaphone to QAnon lunatic Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), dressing up at the State of the Union Address like Cruella deVille, screaming out like it was a drunken sorority bash and now crying out that Chinese spy balloons might be holding the COVID virus, or a nuclear bomb or could be from aliens.  If this is who Republicans want to make the face and voice of the party because they are unwilling to control her – which will only enable the other crazies like Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ) – they are digging a sinkhole for themselves.

(That's not just me from my personal perspective.  Rich Lowry is editor of the conservative National Review -- and no fan at all of President Biden.  And even he wrote the other day, "If the voters believe the choice is between a rickety Joe Biden and the party of a yowling Marjorie Taylor Greene, they’re going to pick Biden every time."

And it’s only just one month of GOP House rule!

And we haven’t even dived into the many Trump investigations…

But to top it all – and yes, this all can be topped -- God help the GOP if this far-right federal judge in Texas throws out the abortion pill.
