The Other McCarthyism

Melissa McCarthy will be hosting Saturday Night Live this coming weekend. And so, I’m reminded of what I think is the best promo they’ve done for the who.
The context is helpful for perspective.
In 2017, McCarthy had appeared as a guest three times during the season, doing a memorable and hilarious portrayal as then-White House PR spokesman Sean Spicer. She was a massive hit in the role. Huge. It was wildly popular.
So, it was big deal when SNL announced she would host the show that season. And immediately there was wondering, but expectation – and anticipation -- that she would hopefully repeat her performance as Sean Spicer.
When the show does its promos for the coming week, they pretty much always (if not always) do it with the hosting standing with one or two other cast members and joking about what’s upcoming.
For the week that Melissa McCarthy was going to host, knowing a good thing, and building on that anticipation, this is the promo they ran --
So, when they brought her back the very next year to host (which was uncommon), there was anticipation if she’d do Sean Spicer again.
And knowing a good thing, as she was pampered getting ready to host, this is how SNL promoted the show. For which, I should add, she won am Emmy.
