The Obligatory Hunter Biden Article
Yesterday, Hunter Biden was indicted on three counts for the illegal possession of a gun while using narcotics.
I don't care.
In fact, honestly, I was almost going to stop right there, at "I don't care." That's how little I care about Hunter Biden being indicted on illegally signing a form when under the influence of drugs five years ago. But in the end, I felt it deserved more of an explanation of all the reasons I don't care.
To be clear, I do care when a person has had a drug problem and mucked up their life. But as a matter of national news? I don't care.
I don't care because Hunter Biden is a private citizen who had no job in his father's Administration. I don't care any more than I wouldn't care about some other total stranger who got indicted.
I don't care because Hunter Biden has cleaned up his life and even made full restitution of money he owed the IRS - a potential crime he was not charged with. At least yet.
I don't care because basically Hunter Biden is being charged for a crime because, while on drugs, he filled out a form wrong for an unloaded gun in his possession for 11 days. The salient point on the gun purchase form he illegally signed it that it asked if he used an illegal substance, including marijuana (which is illegal under federal law), so pretty much tens of millions of Americans have likely signed the form illegally.
I don't care because this is a charge that almost no one ever gets indicted for. As in, almost never. Ever. It pretty much only gets charged as an add-on if you've committed a violent crime connected to the gun possession. It almost never gets charged, in part, because it can't be proven without a drug test. And it only is known here because Hunter Biden himself openly acknowledged it in a book. After getting clean.
Former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti said, "Charges for possessing a firearm while under the influence of narcotics are rarely brought. False statement charges in this context are also rare."
Keisha Lance Bottoms, former mayor of Atlanta who had also been a prosecutor and magistrate judge, said "In my over 29 years as an attorney, I have never heard of it."
Michael Brownwich, former DOJ Inspector General and an Assistant US Attorney, said "It doesn't happen. DOJ will need to produce data in discovery, which will show that this is the most selective of prosecutions."
I don't care because, what Mr. Brownwich states, suggests that Hunter Biden may even be acquitted if he choses to go to court and not plead.
I don't care because while Hunter Biden was a private citizen and signed a form illegally which outrages (!!!) Republicans, Trump's daughter Ivanka was actually part of the Administration and got 41 free trademarks from China before Trump cut a deal with the country to protect the Chinese telecom firm ZTE which also had ties to North Korea, and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner was actually in the administration and received $2 billion for his business from Saudi Arabia, none of which concerns Republicans.
I don't care because the only reason Hunter Biden got indicted for something almost no one ever gets indicted for unless it's attached to a violent crime has absolutely nothing to do with Hunter Biden, but is because Republicans put on pressure in order to "get" President Biden, and this is purely and solely political.
I don't care because Hunter Biden being indicted on these personal gun/narcotics charges has absolutely zero to do with Hunter Biden, and is only about Republican efforts that are purely and solely political to find something, anything not on Hunter Biden, but to impeach President Biden on -- a reality which was made even more abundantly clear after the indictments were announced when Republicans said the quiet part out loud. That's when, rather than stating their pleasure at accused felon Hunter Biden having to face justice, they instead expressed their disappointment that the indictments had nothing to do with President Biden, most notably and pointedly highlighted by House Oversight Chair Joe Comer (R-KY) complaining, "That's the one crime he committed that you can't tie Joe Biden to." And Trump himself writing that the gun charge "is the only crime that Hunter Biden committed that does not implicate Crooked Joe Biden."
In their own, outspoken words, Republican leaders don't care about Hunter Biden illegally signing a form when under narcotics that no one in his situation gets charged with.
Indeed, I don't care because I can't imagine anyone actually, truly, honestly cares more than a hiccup that five years ago "Hunter Biden," while on drugs, signed a form illegally for a unloaded gun he had possession of for 11 days -- least of all a party of gun advocates who believe that anybody, including those with mental illness, should be able to buy a gun, even a loaded AR-15, and if his last name was anything other than "Biden" and his father wasn't in the White House this wouldn't even register as a blip in their lives, a few steps below, "You know I hate raisins, and you promised you'd pick them all out of my cereal first."
And that's the bottomline. This investigation of Hunter Biden was supposed to find for Republicans the Big Proof supposedly trying Joe Biden to bribery and corruption - and instead, it's three charges against his son for signing a gun purchase form illegally. That almost no one ever gets charged for, unless connected to a violent crime.
Whatever happens to Hunter Biden - whether found guilty, acquitted or takes a plea - that's a private matter between him and the courts.
Me, I don't care.
