The Name's LaGuardia -- Part 5

And so we continue you with the Second Elisberg Industries International Film Festival, with the little-known (and little-seen) Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Fiorello!, based on the life of New York City major Fiorello H. LaGuardia.  Most of the footage here is from a very good-looking production done in 2012 at NYU.  The score for the 1959 show is by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock, who five years later would write Fiddler on the Roof.

We've reached Part Five, and you can scroll back to find any of the previous episodes that you might have missed.

Earlier, young up-and-coming lawyer LaGuardia had rushed out of his office to help a group of women on strike at the garment factory and whose leader, Thea Almerigatti, had been arrested.  Unfortunately, as a result of this last-minute need, LaGuardia had had to cancel a sort of low-key first "date" with his secretary Marie, who has long been in love with him.

Understanding, since that's who Fiorello is, but annoyed and frustrated none-the-less, Marie vents her frustration about romance to her ever-cynical co-worker Morris.  Here is Joanne Shea and and Akira Fuku in the comic song, "Marie's Law" -- which includes some of lyricist Harnick's most fun plays-on-words and clever rhymes.  (How can you not admire rhyming "criminal" with "women'll"...?)
