And this now brings us to the finale of our Video Festival for the 2000 Broadway Revival of The Music Man. And to end the gala, here for the last song will be...oh, you know.
Here on the 2000 Tony Awards is Craig Bierko as Prof. Harold Hill telling the River Cityzians all about when the Great Creatore, W.C. Handy and...John Philip Sousa all came to town on that very same historic day.
Rebecca Luker also makes an appearance here as Marian, happily marching along with Prof. Hill and lovingly being kissed by him. I suspect that this was re-staged that way to get her on the Tony broadcast, since in the show she's one of the few townspeople not spellbound by the Professor during this Fourth of July event, and doesn't fall for him and kiss until the footbridge scene near the end.
Historic note: the author of The Music Man, Meredith Willson, actually played in John Philip Sousa's band. I believe he played the piccolo. No, not a trombone, even had there been 76 of them...
