The Land of Cotton

Yesterday, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) posted a pandering tweet that read, “Is there a single American who thinks our country is safer and more secure under Joe Biden's leadership?”

By the way, to be clear, when I refer to the tweet as “pandering,” that is not a subjective assessment.  It doesn’t address his view of safety (which we’ll get to in a moment), but rather his suggestion that there isn’t “a single American” who feels more safe today than when Trump was president.

I don’t think Tom Cotton is an idiot, so the only explanation that he thinks there might not be even “a single American” who feels safer today than when the Trump was in office can only be described objectively as pandering.  I suspect he might say he was using hyperbole or exaggeration, but that’s what made it pandering.

But he asked the question, so it’s fair to answer it.

Yes, since I feel safer with Joe Biden as president, rather than having malignant narcissist Trump with his finger on the nuclear bomb, I can say with full confidence that there is, in fact, at least one American who feels safter today than under Trump.

And given 81 million Americans voted for Joe Biden to be president – which is seven million more Americans than voted for Trump – (numbers which the pandering Tom Cotton surely knows, because he’s a U.S. Senator and I’m sure he follows such things) I suspect I’m not alone.

Having answered Cotton’s question, I think it’s fair to find out his own perspective on what he asked.

I’d love to know where Cotton stands on feeling safe when Trump ended the Iran nuclear deal with safety protections?

And Trump aligning with America’s enemy Russian despot Vladimir Putin?  Adding that he trusted the brutal autocrat Putin more than all U.S. intelligence.

And learning that Trump was paid millions by American’s enemy China for – in Trump’s own words – “services”?

And Trump losing the trust of by many of the United States’ closest allies?

And Trump wanting to pull out of NATO?

And, since many defense experts saying that Climate Change is a major threat to the United States, Trump ending our participation in the Paris Accord?

Further, I’m curious how safe Tom Cotton felt when seeing all the documents Trump took from the White House (many of them classified) sitting out wide open in a ballroom and bathroom of Mar-a-Lago?

And did he feel safe hearing the recording of Trump talk about classified material to a visitor at Mar-a-Lago who did not have security clearance and who later told others about it?

And, as long as we’re asking, I’m interested to know how safe did Tom Cotton feel on January 6, 2001, when he was at the U.S. Capitol and violent Insurrectionists broke into the building after having built a noose and called for the death of Vice President Mike Pence?  A lot of his fellow Republicans in Congress were running and huddling for safety with Democrats, but perhaps Cotton was feeling macho, knowing the Insurrections were on his side.

And how safe does Tom Cotton feel when hearing Trump say that a president should have total immunity (which would include Democratic presidents) to do whatever he or she wants.

And does Cotton feel safe when hearing Trump say that he plans to be a dictator on Day One, should he be elected?  Okay, in fairness, given his past standards, Tom Cotton might feel good about that one.  Though he should keep in mind that “President as dictator” would then become the standard once a Democrat returned to office.  How safe does that make Cotton?

And we haven't even gotten to Trump saying that COVID would disappear in weeks like a miracle, and that maybe you should consider drinking bleach, but not masks which he didn't believe were really necessary, and he even downplayed getting the vaccine even though it was fast-tracked during his time in office -- with the result that so far a million Americans have died of COVID.  So, while I suspect they'd say they don't feel safer under Trump, or they'd say it if they could, I wonder if Tom Cotton feels safer now from COVID than during its height while Trump was in office and tried to get everyone to ignore it?

And that’s just for starters.

I’ll hang up now and wait for his answer.  When he’s done pandering.
