The Journey of a Thousand Miles Startles with a Single Step
I didn't have a chance to catch up on the news yesterday, but did see a headline on RawStory that caught my eye. It said --
"Trump 'startles' industrialists with push for a stake in big American businesses"
The article began: "Trump's push to have his administration take a bigger stake in major American businesses is beginning to scare industrialists and executives, according to a new report."
While it is a disturbing story, I can't figure out why industrialists are "startled" by it. Trump has not only been very clear that this is what he wants to do -- he's already done it. Several times.
Trump has had the U.S. government buy part of a steel company, and he's also had the government buy --
A 10% stake in Intel.
A "golden share" of US Steel, after a takeover of Nippon Steel.
A 15% stake in MP Materials, a rare earth producer, making the government the largest shareholder.
A 10% share of Lithium Americas, which works in domestic lithium production.
A 10% stake in mining company Trilogy Metals.
A potential 20% ownership in Westinghouse Electric, as part of an $80 nuclear financing deal.
And others.
Not to mention that Trump wanted to the government to buy a stake in Spirit Airlines, after it declared bankruptcy, but that didn't go forward.
So, what in the world is "startling" to industrialists about Trump's position?? Where they just not looking? Did they see it and not want to believe it? Were they okay when it was happening to other companies, and only got "startled" when they realized, "Hey, this might happen to us, too!!!!"??
Indeed, the article went on -- ""'Some executives are so worried Trump will ask for a stake in their company that they have prepared for Oval Office meetings by rehearsing what they would say to fend off the president's advances,' the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday based on information from the lobbyists involved in those preparations."
This "hilarious" thing in all this -- aside from ace industrialists being "startled" by this... and by anything by Trump at this point -- is that for 70 years, conservatives have been calling Democrats (and The Libs) "socialists" and "commies," and for the first time, when an administration actually has begun diving in and having the government literally buying parts of private industries, which is a core tenet of communism and socialism, when government owns the production and distribution of commerce...it's a conservative one!!!
And, to be clear, this isn't just about what Trump is doing, but the MAGOP in Congress accepting and enabling it.
Gee, go figure.
Startling.
