The Jane Horrocks Fest Continues...
I'm an admirer of British actress Jane Horrocks, and when I came across the new (and rare) material of her famous, galvanizing performance in a 1993 West End revival of Cabaret, I thought it was a good opportunity to not only post them, but also -- since she's not particularly well-known in the U.S. -- a few others videos to show her range.
On Monday, I noted that I had tracked down a couple other videos of her in that notable production, which also starred Alan Cumming as the M.C. I posted her gutsy performance of the musical's title song yesterday, and here’s the first of the “new” ones I found. It’s “Mein Herr,” which was written for the film adaptation, but added into the stage production.
(Side note: in the original London production of Cabaret, done in 1968, the role of 'Sally Bowles' was played by none other than Judi Dench.)
As I said yesterday, this production was a deeply dystopian interpretation of the show, and her version of 'Sally' is more “true” to the character, being an extremely-mediocre singer caught in a desperate situation, whose life is falling apart in the early days of Nazi Germany. And I should add again that Jane Horrocks is actually an excellent, accomplished singer, whose off-center interpretation and slightly off-key notes are core to her performance.
