Songs of the Vagabonds

The other day, I told the story here of John Michael King (who created the role of ‘Freddie Eynesford-Hill’ in the original production of My Fair Lady) and his father Dennis King, a major Broadway star in its early day, who most famously starred in the original production of Rudolf Friml’s hit, The Vagabond King, and introduced the popular song, “Song of the Vagabonds.”

I mentioned two other things related to this.  The first was that The Vagabond King had been made into a movie in 1956.  So, I thought it would be proper to show Oreste Kirkop singing “Song of the Vagabonds” from the film.  (And no, I hadn't heard of Oreste Kirkop, although I have since learned that he was a successful opera singer who performed at major opera houses, including Covent Garden.)

And I also mentioned that I first heard the song when, as a kid on a family trip to Europe, I bought a record album in London of showstopping numbers from musicals, sung by my fave Harry Secombe.  And it was only right to post that, as well.  Besides, any chance I can have to post a video of Harry Secombe, I’m going to take it!
