Something for "Everybody"

If you liked the TV series Everybody Loves Raymond, this is a joyous, wonderfully funny hour.  And even if you don’t know the show, I think you’ll find it very funny.  It’s a 30th anniversary celebration at the Paley Center – though not of the cast.  It’s the show’s two creators, Ray Romano and Phil Rosenthal, along with the writers.  And for an hour, they tell stories about the real-life stories on which they based the episodes and how the show developed, and working with the actors and more.

It's just really very funny and very entertaining.

I’ll pass along just one story that Phil Rosenthal tells, but it isn’t about any particular episode -- though it’s sort of about how all the episodes came to be.  Not mentioned is that on most sitcoms, the writing staff regularly stays at work on 11 o’clock at night or even beyond until the morning, working out that week’s episode.  But Phil, as the Showrunner, almost always sent everyone home at a normal end-of-work hour – usually around 5 or 6 PM.  The reason, he explains, is because that’s when people usually eat dinner, and sitting around the dinner table is when the most family arguments occur and most stories about the day are told.  And that was how they would get episode ideas for Everybody Loves Raymond.
