O huzzah. After over 20 years, I finally have a real, adult refrigerator.
For the past couple of decades, I've had a really mediocre refrigerator in my apartment. Well, it was mediocre when the landlord put it in 20+ years ago. It's been bad for the past 10 and dismal for the past five years. A small, one-level freezer that was not "no frost.'' One small shelf in the door. A mediocre vegetable bin. No separate door for the freezer. And defrosting it was a pain, and getting rid of the pan of water that would fill during the process. Difficult to adjust the single thermometer that controlled both the freezer and fridge -- so if you wanted ice cream to freeze solid, and didn't adjust properly you risked freezing what was in the refrigerator cabin. Or you could have cool air in the main box, and maybe end up with ice cream sludge. And then add the fact that the door opened from the left side, where the wall is, which meant I had to go to the wall first before opening the door, and then squeeze my way out when closing it. About a month ago it start draining into the vegetable bin. I'm not quite sure why but I think it had to do with condensation. So, I had to mop up the water in the bin a couple times a time -- not to mention it also leaked on the floor. I'm a patient fellow (as you can imagine from this), but enough was enough. I've had a few landlords since this was put in 20 years ago, and though the new fellow is nice enough, he -- like most landlords -- prefers not to spend money, so I didn't know how he's react. But this seemed a no-brainer, especially after the repairman he sent too one look at the thing and said, "This should be replaced." The landlord himself then came over to make his own assessment. And...he agreed! And the new refrigerator was installed today! So, to repeat, o huzzah! Two levels in the good-sized, no-frost freezer. A magical separate door for the freezer. Three shelves in the main door. Two vegetable bins (not very big ones, but it's nice having two). An abundance of room in the main cabin. And two actual thermometers, cold air for the freezer and cool in the main fridge. What a concept. And it opens from...the right!!!! (It's funny, but after 20+ years, out of habit I still find myself moving to the wall before opening the door, only to realize my gaff.) It's like being a real adult. Food, glorious food.
