SNL: It's Mulaney Time

I mentioned yesterday that I thought last week's Saturday Night Live was terrific, and that I'd be posting a variety of sketches from the show.  Here's the next.

Actually, it's not really a sketch, but the opening monologue by John Mulaney.  Ace readers of these pages will recall that a week ago or so, I wrote about an absolutely wonderful episode of the IFC series Documentary Now! that was a parody documentary of the making of a musical cast album.  As I mentioned at the time, that was co-written by John Mulaney and Seth Meyers, and Mulaney played the Stephen Sondheim-like character.  He also is a former writer of SNL.  This is the second time he hosted, and both shows were excellent.  I don't know if he had a hand in writing any of those two shows, or if they just lived up to his standards both times.

The opening monologue isn't one of those that brings in cast members or does anything special or goofy.  It's just a basic stand-up monologue, which is what John Mulaney is, a stand-up comic.  But...it is just so much fun that I thought it had to be included in the best of the week.
