What with tonight being the live TV production of Jesus Christ Superstar on NBC, I thought it would be nice to go back to the beginning. And this is the song which really broke out from the original concept album by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, "I Don't Know How to Love Him," which was sun by Yvonne Elliman. She had quite a run with the show -- not just creating the role for that album, but starring in the original Broadway production, and then recreating the role for the 1973 film. Here's a clip of her from that. With a terrific bonus to follow. And this is the bonus. It's Yvonne Elliman once again singing the song for a special event at the end of a tour of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2017, a full 44 years later. A tour was put together together in 2015 with Ted Neeley recreating his role as 'Jesus'. It traveled the U.S. and then went to Europe, ending in The Netherlands, where this clip is from. After I believe the final three performances of the tour in Rotterdam, Elliman and Barry Dennen -- who played 'Pontius Pilate' like Elliman in all three venues: the original concept album, the first Broadway production, and the film -- joined Neeley on stage for some conversation and song. This is her performance alone, and I'm pretty sure from the very last performance. The camerawork is a little wobbly, but just fine.
